PSYCHIATRYPsychiatrists with a general practice deal with patients with all forms of mental, social, and emotional disorders. They may specialize in addiction disorders, psychiatric research and education. New jobs for well-educated psychiatry majors spring fourth on the job market yearly. After high school a student should prepare to spend from twelve to fourteen years to complete the required course work and clinical training for this career. Becoming a psychiatrist is a long, difficult and costly education; requiring you to first become a physician and then tested to be qualified for psychiatry. Experience is a must. The average psychiatric student spends one to two years interning with a qualified professional. Experience proves worthy in the long run, by helping the student acquire skills needed to graduate and do well. Psychiatry is an ever-expanding field. The need for mental health care will grow in the near future. Population growth will cause people to try and maintain a healthy mind by seeing a psychiatrist. The salary of a psychiatrist ranges from $2,800 to $18,375 per month, depending on the location and the abilities of the doctor. Because psychiatry is mainly practiced privately, benefits are up to the private owner. To become a licensed psychiatrist, one must acquire a high school diploma, eight years of post secondary training and must serve a residency. They need three to five years of training after medical school. Graduation from medical school is required. Upon entering the work world, psychiatrist will need to be licensed by the state in which they will practice. Psychiatry is a field that takes hard work and determination. But not only that, psychiatrists generally are friendly, good listeners, speakers, and writers. A psychiatrist must also be able to organize, keep secrets, and be able to read body language. Though the field is definitely not for everyone, people excel in this field who posses a good personality and have advanced com-municating skills. Schooling for 12 years is what turns most people away, but this creates a void in which the right people with the right skills are needed to fill. |
