THE KING AND THE PAWN

The sun rose early that day. Edmond woke up and looked straight at the ceiling for a few
minutes. Then suddenly he pulled his covers off and ran to get dressed. The king had
called for him and he couldn't be late. He brushed his teeth with Colgate, put on his
best clothing and sprayed on some Tommy cologne. Everything had to be just perfect.
Edmond went into his kitchen and made himself a bagel to go. He put on his Nike Airs and
sprinted out the door with the bagel in his hand. While running, he took two bites out of
the bagel and threw the rest towards a bird. The palace was coming closer. Edmond slowed
down and wiped his mouth with his sleeve. He started walking calmly, like a gentleman.
This could be the moment that he was waiting for all of his life.
Edmond was a single, 26-year-old man with a good heart. He had hazel eyes and dark brown
hair on pale skin. He was almost six feet tall and was built; in other words, a fine guy.
He worked as an architect when he was not busy playing a role of a soldier of the
kingdom. Edmond had a dream; he wanted to be successful, famous, wealthy, and be his own
boss. In order to be recognized in the community, Edmond worked hard on each and every
assignment he did. Each time building more bricks of reputation. After many years of hard
work, he was invited to the palace to meet with the king.
Edmond passed the guard check and entered the palace. He was asked to sit in the
guestroom where the king would come and meet with him. King Raptor entered the room
slowly and majestically. Edmond immediately stood up. "Sit," said the king in a soft
voice. King Raptor was wearing a long red robe. His crown shimmered in the light. The
king sat in his seat. He started "I have called for you because I have heard quite a lot
about your excellence in battle." He paused, then asked, "Is that Tommy cologne I smell?"
Edmond nodded. He continued, "It smells great! I'll have to order myself some bottles.
Back to what I was saying, I wanted to offer you a position as the Chief General of our
kingdom. I will give you some land in return for good services from you. Are you
interested?" Without hesitating, Edmond took the offer. The king congratulated him and
swiftly left paying no more attention.
Edmond moved into the kingdom and resided over his powers as Chief General. For the first
few days, the king was very pleasant with Edmond. But something went wrong after a few
days. King Raptor was not speaking or giving any importance to Edmond. He started to
order Edmond around as if Edmond was some sort of low life. Edmond's feelings were being
hurt, but because he thought that the king could help him make his dream a reality, he
underwent the torture to his self-esteem. King Raptor made it very obvious that he was at
a higher position than the others were in the kingdom. The situation came to a point
where the king humiliated Edmond in front of everyone without feeling bad about it.
Edmond had become a person who was used by the king for the king's own purposes. In other
words, he became a pawn.
The time finally came when an opposing kingdom came to fight King Raptor's kingdom. The
enemies were dressed in black. King Raptor's army was wearing white. This was the time
when Edmond could prove himself. He set up his men and planned every move before it was
executed based on the enemy's actions. He defended his king and risked his army for the
betterment of the kingdom. The deaths of some of his fellow friends gave Edmond a drive
to fight harder to provide justice. His army fought with courage until the last of the
opposing men died. Victory was finally in the air. Suddenly, there was a roar of thunder,
which sounded like a giant's laughter. All of the men, both white and black, and
including King Raptor and Edmond, were picked up by a giant hand and put into a box. What
had happened?
After the game, the king and the pawn go into the same box regardless of status.
