The Transformation
It was a normal Tuesday for Ted Williams, on his way to his job at 6:30 in the morning.
He has no wife or children and his parents have recently passed away. He is in a dead-end
job that he hates. He doesn't even know why he continues to work there; maybe it is for
the money or sense of responsibility. Either way the job is very degrading. His daily
routine is very uniform. He stops at his usual coffee stand for his decaffeinated coffee
and jelly donut for breakfast. He then makes his way to the 16th subway station and waits
for the 7:00 subway. As he stands there eating his donut he notices something very
peculiar about the station. Through his eyes it appears to be bigger than usual. Maybe it
is just the early morning and lack of sleep affecting his judgment but it is bothering
him. The subway arrives on time and he boards.
As he is sitting on the seats he watches rats along the subway scurry off the track and
into the little cracks into the wall. He wonders what it is like to be that small. As the
rats distract him he spills his coffee on the sleeve of his shirt. As he wipes the coffee
off his sleeve he notices that his sleeves are bigger than they use to be. He ponders it
for a minute than ignores it. The subway comes to the stop and he gets off. He proceeds
to the exit of the subway and into the streets of Philadelphia. He looks at his watch and
realizes that if he doesn't hurry he will be late for work. He starts to run but
struggles to get through the large crowds of people that don't even try to get out of his
way. As he is running he drops his briefcase and all of his papers fall out. He is
feeling very frustrated and mad that he dropped his briefcase and that nobody is helping
him pick the papers up. As he thrashes about he can here the hate filled comments from
the drivers of the cars such as "Get out of the way you waste of space!" and "You're such
a loser!" He glances at the selfish people and continues to clean up. He finally gets his
papers together and starts running to work.
As he arrives at work his boss at the front door greets him.
"Late again Williams, that is 8 times this month." "I am going to start deducting money
from your pay-check."
"Yes sir, I am sorry this will be the last time, I promise." Joe replied.
"You promise! Your promise is not worth anything"
As those words came out Joe put his head down and was deeply hurt. He excused himself and
made a B-line to his small cubical. He finally reached his small, unattractive workspace
and saw with great demise a note from his partner Joe Friday. The note said that he
needed the plans for the amusement park A.S.A.P. As Ted violently ripped open his
briefcase and started searching for the plans he realized that he had left them on the
street. By this point he was having the worst day of his life. As he was walking to Joe's
corner office he noticed something weird happening. The water fountain in the office
seemed to be higher on the wall before. And the fake plant in the corner seemed to be
taller. One of the weirdest things was his friend Mike was actually and good 3 inches
taller than him. Usually Ted is 3 inches taller than Mike. He finally arrives at Joe's
office and knocks on the door.
"Come in!" screams Joe. He takes one look at who it is and turns around in his chair.
"You wanted to see me sir?" asks Ted.
"Yes I did, replied Joe. "Do you have those plans for me?" asked Joe.
"Well sir you see what had happen was, (but at that point Ted realized that there was no
point in making excuses) no, no I don't sir," Ted sadly said.
"Oh man Ted, I swear you are such a failure. You can't do one thing right," said Joe.
At the end of those words Ted could feel something happening. He started to fall into the
seat. His clothes were starting to cover his hands and feet. When he finally realized
what had happen he was only one foot in height. He had shrunk and was continuing to do
so.
"I'm sorry Ted but you are fired, now get out of here before I call security," said Joe.
As he made his way out of Joe's office he realized that he was the size of a 5-year-old
child. He literally had to dodge the steps of other people feet. He was too small to do
anything so he decided to leave the building as quickly as possible. When he was about 10
feet from the door he saw a huge crowd of children coming in for a tour. By this time he
was as small as a rat. He quickly and barely avoided the feet of the giant kids and ran
out of the building and down the street.
As he was scurrying along the sidewalk he quickly thought of where he could go. He
couldn't go home because he would have no way to reach the doorknob; he had no friends or
family in the city that he could go to stay with. He could think of only one possible
hideout, the subway. He saw the 15th street terminal entrance and quickly made a run for
it. He dodged the steps of passing pedestrians and wheels of bicyclists. He finally
managed to reach the entrance and run down the steps.
As he got to the platform of the station he thought of only one thing to do, hide with
the rats. He stepped to the edge of the platform and jumped. With his eyes closed and
arms in the air he landed on the tracks with a hard thud. He saw a few of the subway rats
and followed them to their hideout. As he approached the rats they looked at him,
snickered and then ran-off. Not only is has he been rejected by humanity but by the
lowest form of creature on the earth, subway rats. This really hurt him because it was at
this point in time that he finally realized that he was worth nothing and a waste, a
waste of time, space, and effort. He wanted to end in then and there. He stood and waited
for the next subway to come barreling down the tracks. As he saw the bright light coming
he said to himself, I had a chance to be someone but I failed. I was nobody and made
nothing of myself. The subway was coming from about 50 feet, he saw the bright light and
when it hit him he woke up.
