WHAT'S LOVE GOT TO DO WITH IT?My life is terrible. Every time I fall for someone, I get hurt. I just don't understand what I am doing wrong. I do everything I can possibly think of. With my last girlfriend, Susan, I bought here flowers, candy, dinner, expensive jewelry, I take her to movies - my treat, I write her love poems from my heart, letters when I'm not with her, I sing to her, I play slow songs for her, and I spend every waking moment with her. All I got in return was a letter saying that we were not meant to be. What I did, isn't that what someone who is in love is suppose to do for the other person? Why doesn't she love me back? Is this love? The New Merriam-Webster's Dictionary describes love as "strong affection" or "attraction based on sexual desire." Is that the true meaning of love? People get so confused when talking about this subject because it is so hard to describe. The simple definition given by the dictionary doesn't even begin to compare to what the majority of the people's connotation of what "love" means. People will do absolutely anything for love. I am a prime example of that. Not only will I do endless things for the girl of my dreams, but I will also spend as much time as I can with them. To me love is a cherished thing between two people. Something that connects two souls for life and that will never let them go. It may be found at first sight or it may need to be worked on from a friendship. Regardless of its beginnings, it is a powerful force that cannot be dealt with lightly. There are also many different "degrees" of love. You could love someone as family, a friend, an earned love for a person, or as love at first sight. The family "love" is pretty much dedicated to people that bore you into this life. The ones that you know that you can tell anything to. Your mother, your father, your siblings, your kids, your grandparents, your cousins, it doesn't matter which one you chose. They will always have a love higher than you can give anyone else. A friendship love is something that must be earned. You have to allow yourself to build up trust for this person. You have to have gone through many things and help each other out of a lot of jams to earn this love. This is also one of the only "loves" that can be dissolved even quicker than it came. This love is very special, but also very fragile at the same time. An earned love for a person is one that happens over time. You start off as friends and during that time something hits you that makes you realize that you want to be with that person forever. This is the kind of love that my parents went through. At first they were friends for years, but one day they woke up and said, "I need this person in my life. I just can't stand to be without them." This is one of the most special loves because you start from scratch and work your way up. This is what most people think of when hearing the words "I love you." The last "love," love at first sight, can happen anywhere. This is one of the rarest to come around, but it ends up being the most enchanting one to come about. I have experienced this one so I'll describe it through my eyes. I woke up one morning and looked outside of my window. I saw the most beautiful girl that could ever have been born. Instantly I am in the shower and run down the stairs to meet this fantasy girl. When I get to her, I introduce myself. Her name is Lindsay. A beautiful name for an even more beautiful girl. The next thing I know we are on a date and have everything in common. Immediately I have a feeling in my heart that we will be together forever. Once she leaves to go back to Florida, the magic still doesn't stop. I dream about it every night, we write letters back and forth, we decided to go to the same college to be together. Everything I do, I do for her. This is the most fascinating love there could ever be. So what about the Susan deal? I guess that wasn't love. It must have been only a fling thrown in just to see how strong my love for Lindsay is. With a love like that I do not need to search for another "love," because I know that love for a minute will not even stand near love for a lifetime. Bibliography None needed |
